MIAMI – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Tampa is scheduled to deliver humanitarian relief supplies to Port au Prince, Haiti, Tuesday after Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike severely flooded portions of the island.
The 6,000 pounds of supplies were donated to Food for the Poor Inc., an international aid agency based in Florida. Supplies include hygiene items, food, water, bed linens and clothing.
“Our thoughts are with those in Haiti and elsewhere who have been affected by the recent hurricanes,” said Capt. Robert Grant, Coast Guard Seventh District deputy chief of staff. “To assist Food for the Poor Inc., with the delivery of these much needed relief supplies is extremely satisfying to our personnel.”
“Food For The Poor greatly appreciates the Key West Chemical & Paper Supply Inc., U.S. Coast Guard and citizens of Monroe County, for graciously donating and transporting the pallets of hurricane relief items to Haiti,” said Angel Aloma, Food For The Poor’s Executive Director. “Food For The Poor will distribute the donated items to hurricane victims throughout Haiti. The collaboration between citizens, business, law enforcement and non-profit is very gratifying to me. It is like a large family coming together at a time of crisis.”
The Coast Guard Cutter Tampa is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va.
