MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif — Coast Guard Cutter Terrell Horne visited California’s North Coast to conduct maritime law enforcement operations in support Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay, June 26, 2019.

The Terrell Horne was commissioned in San Pedro, California, March 22, 2019, and is named after Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne, who was mortally injured while conducting maritime law enforcement operations near Santa Cruz Island, California, on Dec. 2, 2012. Horne and another crewmember were investigating a vessel suspected of smuggling narcotics. As the suspect vessel maneuvered toward the cutter boat at a high speed, Horne placed himself in harm’s way and pushed his fellow crewmember away from the collision. Disregarding his own safety in order to protect a fellow crewmember, Horne demonstrated remarkable initiative, fortitude and daring in spite of imminent personal danger.

“Senior Chief Petty Officer Horne was a longtime resident of Humboldt Bay and obtained his advanced navigation qualifications at Coast Guard Station Humboldt Bay,” said Captain Greg Fuller, Commander of Sector Humboldt Bay. “He led a life of honor and faithful service to our nation and this cutter carries that legacy for its namesake… The cutter did its first visit to the Northern California coast and having the cutter here helped us commemorate the life and service of Senior Chief Horne”

The Horne’s visit to Humboldt Bay and the Northern California area was in conjunction with fishery and boating safety enforcement operations.
