ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. — The crew of the new Coast Guard Cutter Richard Snyder arrived at Coast Guard Sector Field Office Fort Macon in Atlantic Beach Tuesday morning.
Coast Guard Cutter Smilax, the oldest commissioned cutter in the Coast Guard’s fleet, led the Richard Snyder into port.
The Richard Snyder is the Coast Guard’s 27th Sentinel class Fast Response Citter cutter and is the first of its class to be homeported in Atlantic Beach.
The cutter was delivered to the Coast Guard in Key West, Florida, for sea trials in February 2018, and is scheduled to be commissioned in April 2018.
Chief Petty Officer Richard Snyder, the cutter’s namesake, was awarded a Silver Star Medal for attacking Japanese ground forces during an amphibious assault on Biak Island in Papua, New Guinea, May 27, 1944.
