Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal siezes more than 130 bales of marijuana

SAN DIEGO — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, home-ported in Corona Del Mar, Calif., recovered 137 bales of marijuana Nov. 17 in international waters off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. The crew of the cutter spotted a suspicious speed boat in the area and as they headed toward the craft, the speed boat’s crew was observed throwing bales into the water.

Narwhal did not intercept the speed boat but did recover the bales from the water which later tested positive as marijuana. A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station San Diego helped in the search and recovery of the bales.

The contraband was turned over to the appropriate authorites. The incident is currently under investigation.
