HONOLULU — The Coast Guard Cutter Munro (WMSL 755) is scheduled to host public tours at Aloha Tower in Honolulu, Saturday from 10 a.m. through 1 p.m.
The Munro, homeported in Alameda, California, is the sixth Legend-class National Security Cutter of the Coast Guard and the second cutter named after Signalman First Class Douglas A. Munro, the only Coast Guard member to ever receive the Medal of Honor. Munro was awarded the medal posthumously for his actions as officer-in-charge of a group of landing craft Sept. 27, 1942, during the Guadalcanal campaign.
The National Security Cutters are the largest and most technologically advanced of the Coast Guard’s newest classes of cutters. The design provides better sea-keeping and higher sustained transit speeds, greater endurance and range, and the ability to launch and recover small boats from astern, as well as aviation support facilities and flight deck helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Two National Security Cutters, the Kimball and Midgett, are scheduled to be homeported in Honolulu and are anticipated to arrive in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
