Coast Guard Cutter Liberty returns from Blanket, Coat and Toy Drive

JUNEAU, Alaska – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Liberty returned to port Friday after being underway for a week delivering donated items from the Juneau community during the Blanket, Coat and Toy Drive to Pelican, Elfin Cove, Hoonah, Kake and Angoon.

Taku Fisheries donated bins that were placed throughout the city at Costco, Wal-Mart, Safeway, Alaska & Proud, Super Bear Supermarket, Nugget Mall and the Juneau Federal Building. Thanks to the the generous donations from the Juneau community the Liberty was able to provide approximately 5,000 pounds of blankets, coats, and toys to the Southeast communities.

Following the collection period, Alaska Laundry and Dry Cleaners donated their time and equipment to fully clean all the items donated.

“The Liberty was well received by all the communities who were thankful of not only the Coast Guard’s efforts in putting this drive together but also the Juneau community for there generous donations,” said Lt. Brian Tesson, captain of the Liberty. “If it weren’t for the donations of the Juneau community and the time and expense provided by different local businesses, the drive wouldn’t have been possible and for that we thank them.”
