Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island changes command

HONOLULU – Lt. Jessica Barbeau relieved Lt. Jon Rice as commanding officer of Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island during a change of command ceremony at Coast Guard Base Honolulu Thursday.

Barbeau most recently served as a career counselor in Officer Personnel Management Branch at the Coast Guard Personnel Service Center in Ballston, Va. In this position she provided counseling to nearly 2,000 members of the officer corps on a wide range of topics including career management, assignments, promotion, and separation. She also served as a White House social aide to the President.

Barbeau’s previous assignments include executive officer of Coast Guard Cutter Sapelo in San Juan, Puerto Rico, command duty officer at the 7th Coast Guard District command center in Miami, Fla. and as deck watch officer aboard both cutter’s Polar Sea and Polar Star in Seattle.

Barbeau graduated from Suffolk University with a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a double major in marketing and management in 2004.  She went on to obtain a Master of Business Administration from Suffolk University in 2005.  Following completion of her master’s, she graduated from Officer Candidate School in September of 2005.

Rice served as commanding officer of the Galveston Island since 2011. Rice was recently selected for the Coast Guard’s International Affairs Post-Graduate Program and will be attending George Washington University.

The 110-foot Cutter Galveston Island was built in 1992. Each Island Class cutter is named after a U.S. island. The cutter has a 17 person crew, an operating range exceeding 2,000 nautical miles, and the ability to operate at sustained speeds in excess of 28 knots. Its mission include search and rescue response, ports waterways and coastal security operations, and to enforce the laws and treaties of the United States of America.

Capt. Shannon N. Gilreath, commander of Coast Guard Sector Honolulu presided over the ceremony.
