Coast Guard Cutter Elm to Hold Change of Command Ceremony

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Elm will welcome a new commanding officer in a change of command ceremony June 5, 2008.

The crew will welcome Lt. Cmdr. John Kennedy and bid farewell to Lt. Cmdr. Anthony P. Powell.

Kennedy comes to the Elm from an assignment at the Coast Guard Office of Mission Analysis and Performance Assessment at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Kennedy graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 2003, he attended graduate school at George Washington University where he received his Master’s in Public Administration.

Kennedy’s personal awards include three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard Unit Commendation, the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, two Humanitarian Service Medals, the Transportation 9-11 award and three Coast Guard Battle “E’s”.

Powell, a native of Chicago, Il., who assumed command of the Elm in 2005, will be assigned as the Chief of Personnel at Coast Guard Integrated Support Command, Miami, Fl.

Powell’s personal military awards include five Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, a Commandant’s Letters of Commendation, and five Good Conduct Awards.

The change of command ceremony will take place underway aboard the cutter off the coast of Atlantic Beach, N.C.
