Coast Guard Cutter Diligence crew returns home on Memorial Day

5th Coast Guard District News
PORTSMOUTH, Va., — The Crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence returned to their homeport in Wilmington, North Carolina, Monday after a 51-day deployment in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean.

The crew aboard the Diligence patrolled the Mid-Atlantic in support of Operation Ocean Hunter. During the patrol the crew completed approximately 50 vessel inspections, identifying more than 10 violations of federal fisheries laws.

Beyond fisheries enforcement, the Diligence crew completed their biennial Tailored Ship’s Training Availability, an external review of the crew’s ability to respond to a variety of emergency, navigation, seamanship and engineering tasks.

After completing TSTA, the crew aboard the Diligence was chosen to represent the Coast Guard at the 2014 Coast Guard Missions Day held at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, New Jersey. For this event the Diligence crew hosted over 20 Congressional staff members and provided them with hands-on opportunities to experience life aboard the cutter and educate them about the Coast Guard’s role that is intertwined within the Nation’s maritime communities.

“Throughout the entire patrol and during our three week training period, the crew of Diligence exceeded all expectations. I couldn’t be more proud of the crew,” said Cmdr. Jeff Randall, commanding officer of the Diligence.

The crew also provided their insights on some of the difficulties and limitations that challenge aging cutters like the Diligence and the importance of the Coast Guard’s efforts to recapitalize the cutter fleet. This recapitalization plan is imperative to the Coast Guard’s continued ability to execute missions and safeguard national interests.

The 49-year-old Diligence, along with the service’s other legacy medium endurance cutters, is slated to be replaced by a new fleet of Offshore Patrol Cutters that will be able to carry out the Coast Guard’s maritime security and safety missions.

The OPC will be an economical, multi-mission ship, providing pursuit boat and helicopter capabilities and interagency interoperability. Its advanced technical features include modern sensors and enhanced surveillance capabilities necessary to detect threats far from U.S. shores and meet the demands of the Coast Guard’s homeland security, search and rescue, law enforcement and other vital missions.
