Coast Guard Cutter Dependable to hold change of command

5th Coast Guard District NewsCAPE MAY, N.J. – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Dependable, homeported in Cape May, is scheduled to hold a change of command ceremony Monday at 11 a.m.

Cmdr. David “Lee” Petty will assume command of the Dependable from Cmdr. George A. Lesher who has served as the commanding officer since July 2009. Petty is reporting from Coast Guard personnel allowance and pay accounts where he served as division chief within the Coast Guard’s headquarters office of resource management.

As commanding officer, Lesher led Depandable’s crew on eight patrols totaling more than a year away from home port. Missions included search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, fisheries patrols and defense operations, including response to the earthquake in Haiti.

The change of command ceremony is a time-honored event preserved by the rich heritage of naval tradition. It is a custom, which is formal and designed to strengthen the respect for the continuity of command that is vital to any military organization.

The ceremony will take place at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May.
