MOBILE, AL – Lieutenant Junior Grade John W. Velasco will relieve Lieutenant Ian Brosnan as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Cutter COBIA at a change of command ceremony scheduled for Friday, July 27th, 2007. The change of command ceremony is a time-honored tradition deeply rooted in Coast Guard history and signifies the transfer of total responsibility, authority, and accountability from one individual to another. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Coast Guard Base Mobile – Brookley Complex.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Velasco reports from his last assignment onboard Coast Guard Cutter HAMILTON in San Diego, CA. Lieutenant Brosnan previously served on the Coast Guard Cutter KUKUI in Honolulu, HI and will report for Coast Guard Flight Training following the change of command.

Coast Guard Cutter COBIA is a state-of-the-art patrol boat that employs the latest advances in navigation and maritime technology to conduct critical Homeland Security Operations, Search and Rescue, Fisheries and Maritime Law Enforcement, and a broad spectrum of additional Coast Guard missions. In recent years, this has included post-hurricane recovery operations in the Gulf of Mexico, a Presidential Security Zone, and several deployments to support operations in Key West, FL. COBIA is based in Mobile, AL and typically operates in the Gulf of Mexico between St Marks, FL and Gulfport, MS.
