EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Coast Guard Rear Adm. William “Dean” Lee, 5th District commander, and Master Chief Petty Officer Stephen Dykema, 5th District command master chief, are scheduled to formally recognize members from local Coast Guard units for their role in the rescue of a man seven miles south of Cape May, during a ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday at Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, here.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City, search and rescue controllers from Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia and 47-foot Motor Life Boat crews from Coast Guard Station Indian River Inlet, Del., and Coast Guard Station Cape May, N.J., are being recognized for the rescue of Eric Hopkins, 42, of Washington D.C., after the boat he was aboard, the Sea Wolf, sank on Dec. 23, 2010.
Watchstanders at Sector Delaware Bay received a call at 1:35 a.m. that day from a member of the New Jersey State Police reporting a boat was taking on water.
The boatcrew from Indian River located Hopkins and brought him aboard the MLB. The Dolphin crew then hoisted him from the MLB.
Hopkins will be attending the recognition ceremony in honor of his Coast Guard rescuers.
