Coast Guard Crews Searching for Overdue Aircraft

HONOLULU — Coast Guard rescue crews are searching for three people aboard a single-engine aircraft that was reported overdue after taking off from Kona International Airport at approximately 10:25 a.m. Tuesday.

The missing crew departed for a sightseeing trip around the Kilauea area. The aircraft was due back to Kona International Airport at 12:49 p.m.

Coast Guard command center personnel here received a call from the Federal Aviation Administration at approximately 3:15 p.m. reporting the overdue aircraft.

An HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew and C-130 search plane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point were launched immediately to search for the missing plane and crew. A Coast Guard Auxiliary aircraft crew is also aiding in the search over Kilauea Park and the surrounding area.
