SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A Cessna aircraft crashed into San Juan Harbor, Puetro Rico, Wednesday, and Coast Guard and local agencies are responding to the crash site.
Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector San Juan received a report from the the Forces United for Rapid Action (FURA) at 2:24 p.m. Wednesday, stating a Cessna aircraft with one person aboard reportedly crashed approximately 500 yards from the Isla Grande Airport.
Immediately upon notification, the Coast Guard launched two smallboat crews from Coast Guard Station San Juan and issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB). Coast Guard crews arrived on scene within minutes and located the downed aircraft.
“The Coast Guard’s priority was to get to the scene to assist as safely and quickly as possible,” said Lt. j.g. Travis Murray, Force Readiness Officer with Coast Guard Sector San Juan.
One body was recovered by FURA Cobra Unit divers and was transported to awaiting emergency medical services.
Coast Guard crews have established a 500-foot safety zone around the downed aircraft site and the San Juan Harbor remains closed to all boating traffic at this time.
