BOSTON — A Coast Guard boat crew rescued two mariners from a sinking vessel two miles east of Beach Point near Barnstable, Mass., Sunday.
Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders received a distress call that a 17-foot fishing vessel was taking on water at 2:05 p.m.
A Coast Guard Station Cape Cod Canal 45-foot response boat located the vessel, removed the two mariners, and transferred them to Barnstable Fire Department personnel where emergency medial services were waiting.
The vessel is anchored on a sand bar and is scheduled to be salvaged.
“Our crews got on scene quickly, and that made all the difference,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Luke Clayton, a 1st Coast Guard District public affairs specialist. “Because these mariners were ready wth the equipment they needed to call and wait for help, two lives were saved today.”
As water and air temperatures start to warm, the Coast Guard encourages the boating public and commercial mariners to remain alert and always have the correct life-saving gear aboard their vessel. With the right equipment, those in peril give themselves precious extra minutes for rescuers to arrive on scene.
