Coast Guard crews locate missing kayaker near Saco Bay, Maine

1st Coast Guard District NewsBOSTON — Coast Guard crews found an overdue kayaker after a friend reported him missing near Saco Bay, Maine, Saturday.

Maine Marine Patrol aircraft found the 51-year-old’s kayak upright and empty approximately 150 feet off Higgins Beach, Maine, at 6:30 p.m.

The kayaker had been kayaking to Bluff Island from Pine Point. Maine Marine Patrol located the kayaker’s vehicle to confirm he had not returned home.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station South Portland and an MH-60J rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Sation Cape Cod began searching immediately. The rescue helicopter located the kayaker and vectored in nearby marine units who recovered him unresponsive. He was wearing a grey lifejacket and dark wet-suit. He was then transferred by Coast Guard boat crews to emergency medical services at Pine Point for further transport to Maine Medical Center.

The kayaker’s current condition is unknown.

Good Samaritans, Biddeford Fire, Cape Elizabeth Water Extraction Team, and Scarborough Marine units aided in the search.
