PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard Station Little Creek, Va., boat crew medically evacuated a 21-year-old crewman aboard the 709-foot freighter Repubblica Di Amalfi Monday from about 17 miles southeast of Cape Henry, and a Station Fort Macon, N.C., crew picked up a 27-year-old man from the cruise ship Carnival Pride about 30 miles south of Cape Lookout.
Station Little Creek’s 45-foot response boat crew was conducting a routine boarding on the Italian flagged freighter when they learned about the 21-year-old crewman’s high fever and chills. After coordinating with a Coast Guard flight surgeon, they determined the man needed to be brought to shore. The boat crew picked up two Virginia Beach EMS personnel and returned to the ship to pickup the suffering crewman. They brought the crewman to Rudee Inlet at 5:45 p.m. and he was later taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Earlier Monday morning Station Little Creek crews conducted two medevacs from the Carnival Pride in the Chesapeake Bay.
Just after 8 p.m., Station Fort Macon’s 47-foot response boat crew brought the 27-year-old aboard the Carnival Pride back to their station and EMS took the man to Carteret General Hospital for treatment.
