Coast Guard Crew Rescues 4 on Lake Ponchartrain

NEW ORLEANS- A Coast Guard aircrew airlifted four stranded boaters this evening on Lake Ponchartain, east of the I-10 Bridge.

Watchstanders received the call for assistance at approximately 7:15 p.m. reporting a stranded vessel with four men on board. The vessel’s steering wheel had broken off during the thunderstorms and rough seas, causing the men to lose control of the craft and crash on the rock levee. The boat was located on the south shore of Lake Ponchartrain, approximately one mile east of the I-10 Twin Span Bridge.

Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew to rescue the people. The helicopter arrived on scene, hoisted the four men and transported them safely to the Air Station in Belle Chasse.

Rescued were Jeremy Black, 26; Dan Brankle, 39; Dustin Sulfridge, 25; and John Upton, 45, all from the Marion, Indiana area.
