Coast Guard crew medevacs injured fisherman

BOSTON – A Coast Guard boat crew medevaced a fisherman from a 75-foot stern trawler about two miles south of the Gloucester, Mass., harbor break wall around 2:50 a.m., today.

Coast Guard Sector Boston received a radio call on channel 16 VHF/FM from the crew of the Boston-based American requesting assistance for Rafo Piechowiak after he suffered an arm and shoulder injury.

Coast Guard Station Gloucester launched a 47-foot rescue boat crew to assist. Two station crewmen, one of which is a state-certified EMT, boarded the American to assess Piechowiak and assist with transferring him to the station boat.

Station personnel administered first aid while the boat transited back to the station, where they were met by local EMS.

Piechowiak was taken to a local hospital. His condition is unknown.
