BOSTON – A Coast Guard boat crew medevaced a fisherman from a New Bedford, Mass., scallop boat about nine miles south of Chatham, Mass., around 10:30 p.m., Sunday.
Coast Guard Station Chatham received a radio call from the 55-foot Sovereign Star around 9:20 p.m., requesting assistance for Jose D’Oliveria after he suffered a hand injury.
The station’s 42-foot rescue boat, with two Chatham Fire Department paramedics aboard, transported D’Oliveria to Station Chatham where an ambulance was waiting to take him to a local hospital.
“Luckily the Sovereign Star’s crew knew first aid and was able to begin treating Mr. D’Oliveria,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Adam Johnson, the officer of the day at Station Chatham. “Once he was aboard our boat, the fire department’s paramedics continued first aid treatment until we arrived back at the station.”
