Coast Guard crew assists injured fisherman

1st Coast Guard District NewsBOSTON — A U.S. Coast Guard crew medically evacuated an injured crewman Tuesday from a 73-foot fishing vessel 54 miles east of the Merrimack River near Jeffreys Ledge, Mass.

Coast Guard Sector Boston received notification from the Boston-based stern trawler Captain Mark at 7:06 p.m., requesting assistance for a crewman with an arm laceration.

A Coast Guard Station Gloucester boat crew, along with an EMT, responded to the call.

The injured crewman was assessed and then transferred to the station boat where he was taken to Gloucester Harbor. The crew was met by local EMS for transport to a local hospital.

“Because of the laceration and blood loss, we were concerned the crewman might be at risk of losing the limb so we dispatched a boat crew to get him the medical attention he needed,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Robert Scott, an operation unit controller at the Sector Boston Command Center.

Sector Boston crews have responded to eight medical evacuations since January 2011.
