NEW YORK — The Coast Guard coordinated the medical evacuation of a man suffering from chest pains from a cruise ship in New York Harbor, Saturday afternoon.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York command center received notification at approximately 2:30 p.m., stating a 76-year-old man needed medical attention aboard the 1068-foot Bahamian-flagged cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway.
Due to the weather an air medevac was not possible. A conference call between the Coast Guard flight surgeon and the ship’s doctor determined that a small boat medevac was the best, and the command center coordinated with the New York City Fire Department to safely remove the passenger via small boat.
At approximately 5:20 p.m., the passenger was transferred from the cruise ship to an FDNY Marine vessel and taken to awaiting emergency medical services at Homeport Pier for transfer to Staten Island University Hospital.
The individual’s current medical condition is unknown.
