PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard and partner agencies are monitoring the cleanup of waste oil in Newmarket Creek and the surrounding marsh area in Hampton, Friday.
State and local agencies have been overseeing the cleanup of waste oil spilled from an approximately 4,000 gallon holding tank owned by Master Fleet Services since Sunday.
Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads pollution investigators began assisting with the cleanup oversight on Tuesday after oil was washed into the creek by recent rainfall.
The Coast Guard initially responded Tuesday by deploying oil containment boom to protect the creek and local wildlife.
Coast Guard personnel remain on scene Friday along with the City of Hampton, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to coordinate the cleanup by LCM Corporation personnel, who were hired by Master Fleet Services.
