Coast Guard continues searching for missing crewmembers from Bottom Basher

BOSTON — The Coast Guard continues to search for the crew of the fishing vessel Bottom Basher near Lubec, Maine.

The Bottom Basher was reported overdue to 10 p.m. Tuesday. Coast Guard Station Eastport, Maine continues searching the area for the fishermen.

The Coast Guard recovered the remains of one crewman Wednesday, and searched through the night for the remaining two crewmen. Maine Marine Patrol located several pieces of the Bottom Basher within the search area.

Because of the proximity to the U.S./Canadian border the Coast Guard has worked closely with Canadian Defense Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Local resources have also provided support throughout the search.

“Surface temperature is around 42 F, which complicates our search,” said Capt. James McPherson, commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “Local agency support has been tremendous throughout the search. Our unity of effort greatly enhances the response.”
