Coast Guard continues search for missing sailors 1,000 miles east of Cape Cod

BOSTON — The Coast Guard is continuing its search for four sailors approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Friday.

Searching are:

  • a U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina
  • a U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter from the USS Oscar Austin
  • a Royal Air Force HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
  • the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous, homeported in Cape May, New Jersey
  • the U.S. Navy USS Oscar Austin, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia

Air crews and ships have searched a total of more than 17,635 square miles.

Weather on scene is 5-7 foot seas with winds at 21 knots.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Thursday that search efforts will continue until 10:00 p.m. EST (midnight at the search area), Friday.

The 1st Coast Guard District covers from New Jersey to Canada with search and rescue duties extending approximately 1,300 miles from shore. Units across the Northeast conduct more than 2,500 search and rescue cases in a year.
