Coast Guard continues search for missing crewmember

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard continues the search for a missing crewmember who went missing after the work boat he was aboard capsized in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 30-miles south of the South Pass.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call from a crewmember aboard the research vessel, Western Monarch, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, stating that a crewmember was missing after the work boat with four people aboard capsized while transferring personnel working with two research vessels, the Western Monarch and Western Neptune, both 295-foot seismic research vessels. Three people were immediately rescued by the Western Monarch. The Coast Guard has searched approximately 100-square miles of the Gulf of Mexico.

Assets searching are:

  • Coast Guard Cutter Pelican, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Abbeville, La.
  • An HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter and crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans.
