Coast Guard continues search for missing boater near Rancho Palos Verdes

USCGC NARWHALLOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard continues an active search for boater reported missing from his vessel at 9 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2016 near Rancho Palos Verdes.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach received notification of an anchored vessel 500 yards off Rancho Palos Verdes coast left unattended with personal effects onboard.

The individual aboard is reported as a white male, 6-foot 2-inches tall, 220 pounds, red hair and blue eyes.

The individual was last reported free diving in the area and wearing a wet suit.

Watchstanders immediately launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach who conducted initial searches of the area. The Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, homeported in Corona del Mar, arrived onscene to conduct a search of the area throughout the night. A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles conducted a first light search of the area early Saturday morning.

Los Angeles County Sheriffs are conducting dive operations in the area to assist in the search.
