Coast Guard Continues Search for Missing Balloonist

JUNEAU, Alaska — The Coast Guard has continued its search for the missing air balloon that has been missing since Thursday morning.

The Coast Guard has a C-130 rescue aircraft in route to the area of the air balloon’s last known location, 435 miles south of Adak Island. The Coast Guard Cutter Rush is scheduled to be on scene at approximately 11 p.m. tonight. The Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis is scheduled to be on scene Tuesday morning.

The Coast Guard plans to continue the search for the air balloon and its pilot Michio Kanda throughout the weekend and into next week. The Coast Guard has asked the United States Air Force to help in the search and they are scheduled to launch their own C-130 aircraft Sunday morning.

There has been no contact with Mr. Kanda since Thursday morning.

The cutters Rush and Jarvis are home ported in Hawaii and have been in the Alaska area on routine patrol.
