Coast Guard Continues Search for Man Near Tarpon Springs

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. – The Coast Guard has been searching for a man 35-miles west of Tarpon Springs, Fla., since about 4:20 p.m. Monday after he was reported to have fallen overboard from a 35-foot commercial shrimping vessel.

Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a call from the captain of Charlee Girl at 4:17 p.m. Monday reporting that Joseph Reed, 40, of Tarpon Springs, fell from the vessel for unknown reasons.

A crewmember jumped in the water and attempted to bring Reed back aboard the vessel without success. Reed was reported not to have been wearing a lifejacket.

Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Sand Key, in Clearwater, Fla., Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater and the Coast Guard Cutter Key Biscayne, homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla., will continue searching the area today for Reed.

Weather conditions at the time of the incident were 15-knot winds, 2- to- 3-foot seas and the water temperature was 86 degrees.
