Coast Guard continues search for man missing from sailboat

BOSTON (D1 Public Affairs) – The Coast Guard continues its search for a 65-year-old man missing from his sailboat near the northern entrance of the Sakonnet River in Rhode Island today.

Missing is Bernard Mochan of Clinton, Conn.

Mochan’s wife called Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England and reported he fell off their 32-foot sailboat, Elizabeth, around 4:50 p.m.

A 25-foot boat from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill in Newport, R.I., a Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Portsmouth and Tiverton fire departments searched the area earlier today.

The 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Tiger Shark, homeported in Newport, R.I., arrived around 10:30 p.m., to the search area and is scheduled to remain searching throughout the night.

“We remain hopeful that this case will have a positive ending,” said Lt. j.g. Jeff Fry, the command duty officer at Sector Southeastern New England. “We are working closely with local agencies and plan to search through the night in hopes of finding Mr. Mochan safe.”
