NEWPORT, Ore. — The Coast Guard continues to respond after the 48-foot fishing vessel Two Mikes allided with the north jetty at the entrance to Yaquina Bay, near Newport, Ore., Sunday.
Two Mikes began taking on water and sinking outside the channel shortly after impact. The vessel is still intact and remains partially sunk approximately 75 feet off the north jetty, clear of the channel, on the ocean side.
Coast Guard Sector Columbia River’s Incident Management Division has been working closely with NOAA Scientific Support Coordinators, contractors and a representative from the vessel’s owner to mitigate any potential pollution or hazard to navigation posed by the vessel.
Multiple shoreline and river assessments conducted by contractors today yielded no visible sheen or other signs of pollution.
Contractors have recovered two 55-gallon drums of diesel. One 55-gallon drum and three 100-gallon containers of diesel reported to have been aboard Two Mikes remain unaccounted for.
MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport and 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay, both located in Newport, continue to monitor the vessel and assess any potential movement or pollution impact.
Diving operations have been ruled out as a safe means of assessing the condition of the vessel due to its position in the water column.
The Coast Guard will continue to monitor the situation and respond as necessary.
