Coast Guard continues response to grounded tour boat

9th Coast Guard District NewsCLEVELAND – Coast Guard personnel are continuing their response this afternoon to the tour boat Pictured Rocks, which suffered damage while transiting in rough seas Monday night in Lake Michigan near Empire, Mich.

Inspectors and investigators from Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven, Mich., assessed the damage to the boat and report the steel hull appears to be in good condition with no reported pollution issues. There is an estimated 500 gallons of fuel onboard in two independent fuel tanks.

A salvage plan, site safety plan and communications plan have been developed in collaboration between the Coast Guard, the vessel owner, commercial salvage companies, and federal and local agencies, including the Department of the Interior.

In preparation for the salvage, fuel vents are being plugged, water is being pumped out of forward compartments and all moving equipment is being secured.

Once the Pictured Rocks has been re-floated and removed from the beach, it will be towed to Frankfort, Mich., for repairs.

The cause of accident is unknown and is under investigation by the Coast Guard.
