Coast Guard continues response to barge explosion on ship channel in Mobile Bay

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard, additional federal, state and local agencies continue to respond to a barge explosion on the ship channel in Mobile Bay, Ala., Thursday.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders received the initial notification at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday that there was a barge explosion between the George Wallace Tunnel and the Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile Bay. A total of seven explosions have been reported, and the fire has been put out.

Three people were transported to USA Medical Center for treatment of burns. One person was listed in critical condition.

The Port of Mobile is open, and the safety zone has been removed.

The gasoline barge involved in the incident is owned by Kirby Inland Marine. The Coast Guard is developing a salvage plan with T & T Salvage.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
