Coast Guard continues coordination of Misty Dawn pollution response and salvage

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — The Coast Guard continues to coordinate pollution response and salvage efforts of the towing vessel Misty Dawn, which sank on the Kanawha River near Poca, W.Va, Monday.

The Misty Dawn had approximately 4,000 gallons of fuel on board when it sank at approximately 2 a.m. near the center of the channel. The vessel has been completely boomed off and the Coast Guard is working with pollution and salvage contractors to ensure that no additional pollution impacts the waterway. Salvage operations are scheduled to commence sometime between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

The river remains closed to vessel traffic; however, the Coast Guard is working closely with maritime industry representatives and will begin to allow vessels to transit the area to the extent that dive and salvage operations are not impacted.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
