Coast Guard Contains, Recovers Fuel Spilled from Grounded Vessel

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Coast Guard finished containing and recovering diesel fuel Monday that spilled from a grounded fishing vessel.

The fishing vessel Little David grounded in Floyds Creek south of Brunswick, Ga., Saturday. Absorbent boom was placed around the vessel to collect the spilled fuel and pumps were used to remove fuel from within the vessel.

The Coast Guard contracted with an oil spill removal organization to contain and recover the spilled diesel fuel and to also remove all remaining fuel and other contaminants on board the vessel.

Coast Guard personnel conducted several shoreline assessments and did not observe any impacted wildlife. A site inspection conducted Monday revealed no evidence of fuel in the water or around the vessel.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
