Coast Guard conducts search for possible boater in distress

BOSTON — The Coast Guard searched Lake Champlain near Mallet Bay, Vt., Friday for a possible vessel taking on water.

The owner of the pleasure craft Big Splash reported to Coast Guard Station Burlington at 2:13 p.m. that he had heard someone over the radio say they were taking on water and had no life jackets.

Upon notification, an urgent marine information broadcast was issued asking mariners for help locating the vessel, Coast Guard Station Burlington launched a 25-foot response boat crew and a Falcon jet was launched from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod to assist with the search.

The search has been completed with no signs of distress found.

“We take every distress call seriously,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Joe Tallent, command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “When a call comes in, there is a chance someone is in trouble and we have the capability to determine a search area if the reporting source gives us their position and antenna height.”
