Coast Guard conducts memorial honoring former member

13th Coast Guard District NewsSEATTLE — The Coast Guard conducted a memorial service, Sunday, for Petty Officer 3rd class Ronald A. Gill Jr. in Puget Sound just north of Vashon Island, Wash.

Gill suffered fatal injuries after being ejected from a Coast Guard 25-foot response boat during a patrol on Mar. 25, 2007.

Two of Gill’s friends and Rear Adm. Keith A. Taylor, 13th Coast Guard District Commander, attended the ceremony, which was conducted on the deck of a 45-foot response boat medium. The ceremony included a speech, read in Gill’s honor, by one of the vessel’s crewmembers and a wreath laying at the approximate location that the accident occurred.

Gill’s passing had a significant affect on the Coast Guard community. As a result many new safety measures were instituted and long-standing techniques were consolidated or improved upon to ensure a safer environment for Coast Guard crewmembers.
