Coast Guard conducts medical evacuation of injured crewmember

Northeast Atlantic Coast Guard NewsNEW YORK – The Coast Guard medically evacuated an injured crewmember 48 miles south of Montauk, N.Y., Tuesday.

The First Coast Guard District Command Center received notification that a 53-year-old crewmember aboard the motor vessel Dusseldorf Express sustained an eye injury.

An MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., hoisted the injured crewmember and transferred him to Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island, N.Y.

“It was great that we were able to assist with getting him off the ship because of the medical attention that he needed for his injury,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Tye Conklin, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer who assisted the injured crewmember. “The ship was unable to pull into port anytime soon to give him the medical treatment he needed.”

The patient was listed in stable condition.
