Coast Guard conducts medical evacuation of 88-year-old man from Chandler Island near Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard conducted a medical evacuation Tuesday morning of an 88-year-old man from Chandler Island just north of Island Number Two in the St. Marys River.

Just before 9 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, received a request from Chippewa County 911 dispatchers to transport two emergency medical service personnel from the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department to examine an 88-year-old male who was coughing up blood at his residence on Chandler Island.

Sector Sault Ste. Marie launched a crew from Coast Guard Station Sault Ste. Marie aboard a 25-foot response boat with the EMT’s aboard. Six minutes later, they arrived on the island. EMS personnel determined that the man should be taken to a hospital as a precaution. Sector Sault Ste. Marie consulted with the Coast Guard 9th District’s duty flight surgeon who also recommended that the man to be taken to a hospital.

The response boat crew transported the man and EMS to Station Sault Ste. Marie where additional emergency crews were standing by. The man was taken to the War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie where he was listed in stable condition.
