Coast Guard conducts long range medevac of cruise ship passenger

SAN DIEGO – An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego medically evacuated a 75-year-old woman from the cruise ship Oosterdam, 180 miles south of San Diego late Friday night.

The Oosterdam’s crew contacted the Coast Guard requesting a medevac for the woman. A Coast Guard flight surgeon was consulted and determined that an immediate medevac was recommended.

Shortly after 8 p.m., a rescue helicopter launched from Sector San Diego. Once on scene, the crew hoisted the woman and the ship’s nurse from the cruise ship.

Both were safely transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

A HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew from Air Station Sacramento supported the medevac by locating the ship and providing long range coverage.
