Coast Guard conducts change-of-watch ceremony

NEW ORLEANS – The Eighth Coast Guard District recognized the new Reserve Command Master Chief for the Gulf Coastal Region today, during a change-of-watch ceremony here.

During the ceremony, Master Chief Petty Officer John Lachman assumed the responsibilities of the Eight Coast Guard District Reserve Command Master Chief (RCMC) from Master Chief Petty Officer Paul Ladut, who will retire in August.

Lachman entered the Coast Guard Reserve through the Direct Petty Officer Program in January 1981. In 2006 he transferred to Sector Mobile and was working as the Sector Reserve Command Master Chief until selection as the D8 Reserve Command Master Chief.

As the RCMC the responsibilities include assisting in the development of policy for managing the enlisted workforce of the Coast Guard; traveling to various units throughout the Coast Guard, and addressing personnel on quality of life and personnel issues.

The change-of-watch ceremony is a time-honored event preserved by rich heritage of naval tradition. It is a formal custom that is designed to strengthen the respect of authority, which is vital to any military organization.
