Coast Guard closes river bars in Washington, Oregon

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard Capt. of the Port, for the Sector Puget Sound area of responsibility, has closed the Quillayute River bar, and the Capt. of the Port, for the Sector Columbia River, Ore., area of responibility, has closed the Tillamook Bay, Depoe Bay, Yaquina Bay, Siuslaw River and Umpqua River, Ore., bars, Monday, due to hazardous conditions.

The bar closures apply to all vessels and any request to transit the bars prior to re-opening must be approved by the respective COTP. Mariners may contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM Channel 16 for further information or to request crossing.

The Coast Guard will be re-evaluating the bar closures on an ongoing basis and expect to re-open the waterway as soon as the offshore weather improves.

The Coast Guard understands the effects closures have on commerce and will make every effort to re-open these waterways as soon as they are considered safe for navigation.
