Coast Guard Closes Portion of Savannah River After Explosion

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Local, state and federal agencies are responding to an explosion at the Imperial Sugar Refinery on the Savannah River that occurred at 7:30 p.m. that has injured an unknown amount of people.

A unified command has formed for the response, which includes representatives from the Savannah Fire-Department, Savannah-Chatham Police, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Air National Guard, the Coast Guard and many more.

The Coast Guard has closed the Savannah River from Eugene Talmadge Bridge, Ga., to the Hoolahan Bridge, Ga., to all vessel traffic both commercial and recreational.

Coast Guard helicopters and boat crews are searching the Savannah River for any persons in the water.
