Coast Guard closes Intracoastal Waterway near Galveston Causeway Bridge

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard closed the Intracoastal Waterway for more than one mile surrounding the Galveston, Texas, Causeway Bridge today after a tug and barge struck a submerged object.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a call at 9:36 a.m. today from the captain of tug and barge Bullcalf reporting that it had struck a submerged object and was taking on water. The Bullcalf’s onboard pumps were able to prevent the water from swamping the tug. The Bullcalf then made its way to the Southwest Shipyard near San Jacinto, Texas, to inspect the damage.

Coast Guard Station Galveston sent a boat crew to the causeway bridge area, to locate and identify any submerged objects. At 12:15 p.m. the Captain of the Port closed off the area in the ICW surrounding the Causeway Bridge to prevent further accidents. The Traylor Brother’s Construction Company has a construction tender on scene to assist the Coast Guard.
