Coast Guard closes Gilmerton Bridge waterway

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Hampton Roads has closed the Gilmerton Bridge waterway to all traffic due to debris following a collision into the bridge’s north side fendering system and navigation lights Wednesday afternoon.

At 3:56 p.m., Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Hampton Roads received a report that the tug Steven McAllister collided with the bridge while pushing a barge.

The Army Corps of Engineers and City of Chesapeake will conduct a survey of the damage at first light tomorrow. A safety zone has been established in the vicinity of the bridge. The waterway will remain closed until repairs and clean up of the debris have been made.
