Coast Guard Captain of the Port Sector Columbia River, closes Chetco River bar entrance

Coast Guard Sector Columbia River LogoASTORIA, Ore. — Coast Guard Captain of the Port (CATP) for Sector Columbia River issued a bar closure for Chetco River, Ore., at approximately 4:40 p.m. Tuesday due to hazardous conditions.

As a result of high water, debris and limited search and rescue capabilities, the Chetco River Bar is closed to all vessels. Vessels are advised to remain at sea until conditions improve.

The bar closure is for all vessels and any request to transit the bar prior to re-opening must be approved by the CATP. Mariners may contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM Channel 16 or Sector Columbia River by telephone at (503) 861-6211 for further information or to request crossing.

The Coast Guard understands the effects these closures have on commerce and will make every effort to reopen these waterways as soon as they are considered safe for navigation
