Coast Guard boating safety zones for 2011 Macy’s fireworks display announced

1st Coast Guard District NewsNEW YORK – The Captain of the Port of New York and New Jersey has established a safety zone temporarily restricting vessel movement on waters of the Hudson River in the vicinity of Manhattan, N.Y., and Hudson County, N.J., for the annual Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks.

This zone will be strictly enforced on Monday, July 4, 2011, from 7 p.m. until approximately 11 p.m.  All persons and vessels shall comply with the instructions of the Coast Guard Captain of the Port or the designated representative.  Vessels shall maintain a 100-yard distance from any Coast Guard vessel at anchor at all times.

All spectator vessels must be inside designated viewing areas by 8 p.m. and in position no later than 8:30 p.m.  Vessels shall be required to hold position (not at anchor), and not depart the section until released by the on-scene Coast Guard Patrol Commander.  This information will be broadcast via VHF-FM Channel 16.

Regulated viewing areas will be divided into six sections.  They include all waters bounded by a line drawn east from 74th Street in North Bergen, N.J., to West 82nd in Manhattan, south along the Manhattan shoreline to Spring Street, then due west to the Holland Tunnel Ventilator in Jersey City, N.J., and then north along the New Jersey shoreline back to the point of origin.  The establishment of this area is intended to ensure the safety of event spectators.
