Coast Guard boat crew medevacs diver off North Carolina

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. – A Coast Guard boat crew assisted a distressed diver Tuesday afternoon approximately 17 miles southeast of Masonboro Inlet.

A 40-year-old female diver aboard the Aquatic Safari II surfaced from a 71-foot dive with symptoms of the bends. The crew contacted Sector North Carolina watchstanders and headed toward Wrightsville Beach.

The Aquatic Safari II had an EMT on board. Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach dispatched a 47 and 25-foot rescue boat crews which arrived on scene and transferred an emergency medical technician to the Aquatic Safari II.

The EMTs administered oxygen and determined the divers condition was improving. The 47-foot rescue boat crew escorted the Aquatic Safari II back to the station and transfered the woman to awaiting EMS. She was then taken to New Hanover Hospital.
