Coast Guard Begins Partnership in Education with Portsmouth School

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard and Park View Elementary School here celebrated a new Partnership in Education program today.

Coast Guard members stationed at the Atlantic Area and Fifth District commands, located in Portsmouth, volunteered to read books to several classes filled with students from 1st-5th grade.

“The Partnership in Education program is one of the Coast Guard’s best marketing tools, and it portrays the strong ongoing volunteerism of Coast Guard personnel,” said Lt. j.g. Sean Murray. In addition, the program focuses on quality achievement, excellence in education, improved educational opportunities and improved Coast Guard visibility. As part of the program, Coast Guard volunteers donate free time to serve as tutors, mentors and role models.
