JUNEAU, Alaska – The Coast Guard began delivering a donated cargo of coats, blankets and new toys to isolated communities in Southeast Alaska on Monday.The Coast Guard Cutter Liberty had to make two trips to carry the larger than usual load, and has completed delivery to the remote villages of Elvin Cove, Pelican and Hoonah. The Liberty will be departing on its second trip enroute to Angoon and Kake, expecting to complete those deliveries by Friday.
“The mayors and authorities of each town wanted to express their sincere appreciation to the Coast Guard and residents of Juneau for their efforts,” said Lt. Jon Kreischer, Captain of the Cutter Liberty. “The donations made were more than double what we have received in previous years.”
As a humanitarian service the Coast Guard has developed close ties with communities throughout Alaska. By supporting this coat, blanket and new toy drive we are helping to meet some of these needs when the spirit of giving is at its highest.
